For over 30 years my family and I have been making annual trips to the Black Forest in Germany. Every autumn we would base ourselves in hotel Kesslermühle in Hinterzarten from where to set out on walks around the Feldberg area. Approaching this region while recording, I found myself rediscovering the forest by really listening and staying much longer in one environment. During this time the forest was relatively quiet, birdsong could be heard faintly high up in the trees, few cattle dispersed out on the field, barely any hikers on the path and thus the forest was mostly filled with the sounds of wind, water and falling needles on thick layers of moss.
With Unter Dem Rufensteg I tried to capture the effects of slowness and slumber this dense and dark forest has on one who seeks refuge in it, as well as a shared nostalgic feeling towards our stay at the Kesslermühle hotel.
